PACIFIC SONGWRITING COMPETITION
I arrived on the 19th July to Sydney Airport (after having about 3 hrs sleep the night before – it was my birthday!) I was pleasantly surprised to be welcomed not only by Michael, but his lovely wife and kids too!
Although sleepy I was very excited to be in Sydney, I hadn't been there since I was about three so my memories of the city were somewhat blurry! Michael kindly took me on a tour of Darling Harbour and also other sites of Sydney including the Bondi Markets.
I stayed at the Goldsborough Hotel, right on Darling Harbour which was beautiful! I felt very lucky to have such wonderful accommodation.
On Monday I began recording with Sven at Kittygroove Productions. He was quite the character! I felt like we got on really well and had a lot of fun recording. I didn't know what songs to record so I played a few to Sven and we decided on Miss You. Normally I play with a 6 piece band and really love the sound the band produce, so it was unfortunate they could not come with me to record but I wanted to make the best out of the time I had in the studio, so I did some solo piano/vocal demos...well, midi keyboard/vocals! I finished 'Miss You' on Tuesday and began Mirrors Do, where Sven kindly lent his talent on the guitar. Both songs I recorded don't have a full band sound but I plan to re record these with the band arrangements later on.
I also had an interview with APRA – they asked me about the competition and my songs, an article which came up on the APRA site a few weeks later titled “No Stranger to Success” (Stranger was the track I won the competition with). On Wednesday evening we went out with Michael and his wife Debbie to the lovely Astra Restaurant up the top of Star City Casino, it was very flash and the food was divine. The staff were also very entertaining! We then had some cocktails and listened to some music...it was a lovely night.
The 8 am starts weren't ideal for mild insomniac like me, but it was lovely weather and good to get up and make the most of the day. By Thursday I had recorded 2 tracks and still had half a day in the studio so I decided to record a cover of “Georgia”. It was unfortunate that there wasn't a real piano but we tried to get the best piano sound possible from the midi keyboard.
To this point most of my time was taken up by recording and I really wanted to fit in a bit of sight seeing...so I went to the Taronga Zoo! I was planning to just go alone but Michael suggested his family came along too which was a great idea, even Sven and his boy came along! The girls were lots of fun to sight see with and the seal and bird show were a definite highlight!
Back in New Zealand I'd heard from a friend that Chicago the Musical was on in Sydney so I booked tickets to go and see the show (luckily it was just down the road from the hotel). It was incredible, possibly the highlight of my trip! That and also having a few new demos to work on.
I wish that I'd had a few more days to explore, shop and work on more tracks but unfortunately my time was up on Friday morning and it was time to go back to Auckland. I got up early to be picked up by Michael and the lovely and talented Debbie, and we went down to the Opera House and took a few photos.
I arrived back safely in Auckland in the afternoon where the weather was nothing as nice as what we had in Sydney! Overall I had a wonderful time away, and even though the recording aspect was limited for me without a piano or band, I had a great time with Sven recording some demos, enjoyed spending time with Michael's family, and look forward to going back to Sydney sometime soon!
